• Honorary citizen of the state of Nebraska, 08/2008.

• National Scholarship for excellent academic results from University of Tartu, 2005, 2006 and 2007

Activities

• Invented a mass spectrometry (MS) probe to detect dissolved nitrogen evolved from an electrode in aqueous solution to understand the mechanism of hydrazine electro-oxidation, The device was a success and the results were published in Analytical Chemistry.

• Developed, built, customized, and repaired instruments, saving ca. $100,000 for my department. This includes electronic and analytical instruments, and test fixtures for polymer dielectrics measurements.

• For ionic liquid supercapacitor research, designed and built an ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) electrochemistry system to measure solid electrode-ionic liquid interfacial capacitance.

• To study the composition of solid electrolyte interphase in Li-ion battery research, built a spectroelectrochemical cell and measured in-situ infrared (FTIR) spectra at lithium/non-aqueous solvent interface while running cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements.

• Used dielectric analysis methods of D-E hysteresis loop and broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) on newly synthesized polyimides with polar functional groups and found out they are unsuitable for capacitor applications.

• Studied PC/PVDF polymer multilayer films using broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS), leakage current, hysteresis (D-E) loop and breakdown testing to develop better materials for aerospace and electric vehicle applications.

• Designed and built numerous test fixtures for dielectric testing of polymer films at high voltages and high temperatures, including D-E loop, breakdown, leakage current and broadband dielectric spectroscopy, and some very low current measurements.

• LabView and data acquisition – built programs for fast data acquisition for dielectric polymer film testing and electrochemical experiments: 50 kS/s with NI USB-6002 for an essentially unlimited amount of time.

• Consulted and worked with people to find solutions to instrument design problems.

• Reduced sample preparation time 14x from two weeks to one day by inventing a novel method for coating polymer films.

• Because of good communication skills, asked to assist in writing reports for NSF, Airbus, Air Force Research Lab, Tylok. Often tasked with contacting companies for troubleshooting and purchases.

• Taught 5 semesters of analytical chemistry lab courses, including GCMS, AAS, UV-Vis among others.

• Taught electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in electrochemistry workshops.
