Industry Tour – LTA Research Airdock
The Cleveland Engineering Society is excited to host this rare opportunity to tour the former Goodyear Airdock and learn about plans to use the historic Airdock to develop and manufacture state-of-the art, electric powered zero emissions airships. The tour will be hosted by Dr. Alan Weston, CEO of Lighter Than Air Research and a former NASA and Air Force senior executive.
The Goodyear Airdock, as it was formerly known, rests in Akron, Ohio, and was constructed in 1929 from plans created by the Wilbur Watson Engineering Company of Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Watson was a civil engineering icon in Ohio, developing many bridge building techniques that are still used to this day. Construction began in April of 1929 and by November 25 of that year, the Airdock was completed at a cost of $2.2 million. Two dirigibles, the USS Akron (ZRS-4) and its sister, the USS Macon (ZRS-5), were built in the Airdock and launched in 1931 and 1934 respectively.
Having been added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, the Akron Airdock is located at 1210 Massillon Rd., Akron, Ohio, and can be easily seen from U.S. Rt. 224 just east of downtown Akron. The Airdock is not open to the public.
The Airdock is currently home to LTA Research, an exciting venture founded by Sergey Brin with the vision of using a new generation of Lighter than Air Aircraft to supplement humanitarian aid efforts across the globe. The tour will be the local engineering communities first peek at the exciting research and development efforts being undertaken.
Come join us for this unique event that will be followed by a CES hosted happy hour, at Hoppin Frog Brewery, immediately following the tour.
This event is open to both CES members and friends of CES. Though there is no set limit to the number of participants, an RSVP is required to attend in order to get a head count for logistics and planning.
